Highlights:

Friday, October 29, 2004 - Informal Cocktail party.

There were about 14 people in attendance, including spouses and significant others. We met at Stanley’s at the Holiday Inn where we all reminisced on the past and what was new since we last saw each other. It was a great time to renew old friendships over snacks and a drink or two. We were all having such a good time that we lost track and ended up closing the place. We were all looking forward to the next evening’s festivities.

Saturday, October 30, 2004 - Dinner

This was also a great evening. In all there were about 40 people in attendance, including spouses and girlfriends.

Stanley’s was decorated beautifully for the occasion. Red and blue floral arrangements on the tables, little pumpkins decorated with red and blue bows, Large carved pumpkins with candles in them….one had the letters PHS carved in it and big red balloons with Peekskill High School printed on them.

Even though it was a smaller crowd than in previous years, we were all glad to see each other. If someone new came into the dining room his/her name was automatically shouted out. The evening started with cocktails and delicious hors d’oeuvres. During the evening, classmates were treated to three tables of memorabilia. There were some old Drum Hill newspapers (The Dustpan) remember? along with lots of photos and other items. My wife Val brought her entire collection of Peekskill postcards, over 400 of them. There was also a poster as we entered the dining room of photos that I took at the 40th reunion. Each classmate was asked to sign his/her name to the center photo of PHS.

The buffet style dinner offered a delicious array of food, including filet mignon, stuffed sole and roast pork. There was a nice variety of vegetables and side dishes as well.

Besides enjoying the wonderful meal, there was a lot of reminiscing at each table and a lot of photos being taken. During the whole evening everyone was taking photos, jumping from one table to the next. I know that I enjoyed snapping away at each table. After dinner of course, desert! Good Golly Miss Molly! These little tid bits of sweets were so good that one could not resist returning for more with coffee.

After desert, Reg Brown manned the microphone and greeted all there. He told the crowd who was responsible for making the evening as great as it was. Some people mentioned were Val Blauvelt Loos, Donna Turner Anderson, Judy Eich Orlando, John Mancini . Reg also mentioned that the following morning there would be a buffet breakfast planned and asked a show of hands of those interested in attending.

Val Loos also spoke mentioning the hard work it was to prepare for this evening. Contributors were also mentioned in the Year Book. Judy for her Decorating Flair, Donna for her hours of dedicated work, Bob Stuck for the invitations, Mary Ellen Murden Tompkins for Memorabilia & Trivia Games, Deacon Jan Volkmann for the The Blessing, Sal Carano for his generosity and Val and Ted Loos for the preparation of the Year Book.

The evening also included a couple of fun games. One was like musical chairs. Jim Pendergast won at our table. He beat out Andy Pinto. Then there was the trivia…hmmm well when it was my turn I didn’t do so well and was quickly eliminated. Prizes for the games were bottles of wine. Following the games, we had an “open mic” session where anyone who wanted to could speak to the group. Quite a few people got up and spoke. Louis Rubenfeld, Andy Pinto, Donna, Judy, Carol Benson-Webber to name a few. (Forgive me if I don’t remember all who spoke) Senior moment!! Some of the comments were funny and some were emotional, but all of them were great.

There was also a mention that Gary Hyatt was on his honeymoon. Gary graciously introduced his lovely bride. Then there was dancing. The music was not live…but just as good and there was a nice cozy dance floor.

More photos were taken, and more reminiscing until we all called it a night. And a great night it was! Those who were not going to attend the Sunday breakfast said their goodbyes and lots of hugs and kisses were passed around.

Sunday October 31, 2004 - Breakfast

I think there were about 12 to 14 people at the buffet breakfast at Stanley’s. There were many wonderful choices from eggs benedict or omelets to fresh muffins and bagels.

But the conversation was what was great. Again reminiscing was in order along with all of us talking about our lives, including grandchildren, homes and vacations. There was also talk about the 50th Reunion in 2009. Personally, I can’t wait!

Then the end came when we all had to leave. It was rather emotional for everyone. We all wished each other the best and a safe trip home.

For those of you who did not attend, please plan on attending the 50th. Most of us will be approaching our 70’s and who knows how many more times we’ll be able to see each other.

Remember that nobody cares if we are millionaires or paupers. Nobody cares if we have lost all our hair or have gained forty pounds. All that matters is that we can all get together in five years and share the wonderful memories from our school days.

Hope to see you ALL at the 50th.

Warm regards,

Sal Carano

PS: Mike…I had refrigerator magnets reproduced from an old postcard (from the wife’s collection) with a picture of the school on it. We gave them to the classmates after dinner on Saturday. I’m enclosing one for you with some of the photos that I took. Would you please mention on the website that if anybody who didn’t attend would like to have one, just send their name and address via email to my wife Val at grandmaval1941@aol.com. Tell them to put “PHS magnet” in the subject line so she doesn’t think it’s ‘spam.’ We’ll mail one to everyone who wants one….no charge of course.
